Revolutionary Changes in Carrom in India by S.K. Sharma, General Secretary All India Carrom Federation
The All India Carrom Federation after lot of deliberations at
different levels for the last about one year has finally taken
certain decisions which can revolutionise the game of carrom in
India. For final decisions, the Federation conducted a meeting of
the Working Committee of the Federation on 2nd March 2009 in
Parliament House, New Delhi. Delegates from about 20 different
States of India participated in that important meeting. The last
meeting was held on 12th January 2009 at Visakhapatnam.
(1) First of all, it decided to conduct all matches at
domestic level for one year on the basis of
best of three sets of four boards or 23 points whichever is
earlier. A maximum of 11 points can be scored in a game (to be
called a set henceforth). Queen will have the value of two points
and it would not be necessary to cover the Queen. Queen can be
pocketed even as last c/m. Maximum time to make a stroke or to
place a penalty/due would be 10 seconds. In case score is
tied at the end of 4 boards, there will be a tie breaker and even
if still the score is equal, the set will be decided by sudden
death. For tie-breaker and sudden death, both the players will be
given three chances alternatively each to pocket a c/m placed in
straight line of the center circle on the opposite side of the
player pocketing the c/m, within the outer circle touching the line
of the outer circle.
(1a) A time of 2 minutes will be allowed between 1st and 2nd
sets and between 2nd and 3rd sets during which time players can
also consult their coaches but cannot leave the playing arena
during the whole match.
(2) It launched its new but comprehensive website which will
be operational and updated within few days and I will inform you
separately.
(2a) It has decided to send birthday greetings to more than
1000 Indian players, umpires and officials every year and it has
already got printed specially designed birthday cards and started
sending.
(3) For marketing of the game, the Federation would be
approaching different event management and advertising companies.
It will make a corporate video film of 90 seconds which will be
shown to prospective sponsors and celebrities and others. It has
already supplied a set of few hundred fliers (pamphlets) to all its
affiliated units for their promotional work. It will also make one
CD on how to play the game of carrom with certain visuals and voice
overs on the benefits the students can have through carrom. All
these CDs and the CDs of Arun Desphande would be supplied in
about 10,000 schools through different Associations. The sale
proceeds would be shared by different parties involved in such
work. It has also decided to advertise all
national events on one FM radio channel at least. The
host would be required to send 100,000 sms inviting them to
witness various events which will cost only a meagre amount of
Rs.24,000. It will also buy time slots on Doordarshan Sports
Channel National Network for half an honour with availability of
commercial time which will cover the cost and give some profit. The
Media committee will make fresh efforts to negotiate with
newspapers and radio channels to make media partners for various
events. It would also try to sell the advertisements spots while
showing the matches live on local cable network and in the playing
hall on big screens.
(4) The Federation is trying all out to introduce
this game in more than 10,000 schools by including carrom in their
annual activity calendar. The negotiations have reached last stage.
Negotiations are on with one school having more than 100 schools in
various cities of India to adopt the game of carrom and to conduct
inter-school and then All India School Tournament for their
schools. They have agreed in principle. The Federation has signed
two agreements with two different bodies to start residential
carrom academies in Varanasi in UP and Akola in Maharashtra.
Besides, it has decided to start seven days training programme for
junior and sub-junior level boys and girls in every zone (there are
five zones in India) during the forthcoming summer vacation. The
coaching Committee will select few talented players from all zones
and then they will be asked to attend two camps during the
remaining period of the year. There is a separate scheme for
training of senior players.
(5) It has decided not to allow the senior players of any
State Association (30 States are affiliated) if they do not field
junior boys and junior girls along with their senior players in
zonal tournaments. This was done to give proper exposure to junior
level players so that they can learn from the top senior players of
India. The States which will not be deputing junior and sub-junior
teams in national championships, will be suspended for one year
without any notice.
(6) It has decided to give special incentives to encourage the
participation of girls and women players in different national
level tournaments.
(7) It is mandatory for all State Associations to invite an
Observer of the Federation when they conduct their State level
tournaments.
(8) In order to motivate players, officials and affiliated
units, it has instituted Carrom Excellency Awards and would be
awarded during the biggest carrom event every year. The three
shortlisted nominees in each category will be invited in that
national championship at the cost of the Federation and the name of
the winner announced in the prize distribution function.
(9) It has introduced new but very tough selection
procedure for the selection of Indian players for every
international event.
(10) It has introduced new examination for qualified umpires
to have more qualified and efficient technical officials and
referees.
(11) It will organise 'training for trainers' courses every
year and have a panel of coaches in every State besides having a
national panel of coaches.
(12) It has introduced new uniform for umpires, referees,
Indian players and officials.
There is lot more but mail has already become lengthy.
The Federation has already started working on introducing
colour boards for domestic use and use of different colour
synthetic c/m in India.
Still the thinking process is going on.
I request the President of the ICF, Mr. Arif Naqvi to
circulate the above information to all those whom he deems
it fit to send.

ALL INDIA CARROM FEDERATION Carrom Flash Flash by B.K. Haranath Hyderabad, India Under Dogs Hyderabad taking off with winning spree from quarter
finals onwards , reaching the finals by upsetting the apple
cart of carom giants Maharashtra accounted for Karnataka to
lift the coveted Men”s Team championship title.. The victory
is all the more much sweeter for Hyderabad
whose players were in the lower rung of Indian rankings. L
Suryaprakash gave a head lead to Hyderabad when he beat JN
Shyamsunder of Karnataka a 25-12, 25-14 in a convincing
straight game victory. However, D Ravinder Goud and E
Ashok Kumar of Hyderabad succumbed meekly in spite of
winning the first game at 25-12 by loosing the next two games
at 12-25, 6-25. This meant that the second singles in
progress between MA Hakeem of Hyderabad and Zaheer Pasha of
Karnataka would decide the winner. Hakeem
took the first game at 25-13,falling into a bad patch to lose the
second at 10-25. After losing the first three boards in the
third game, Hakeem decided to go aggressive making a white slam in
the fourth board to lead at 12-9. Zaheer Pasha fought
back to go to 23-16 from this point Hakeem took three boards in a
row to win the game at 25-23 and to win the match and get to Gold
for Hyderabad. Carrom Championship Tournaments in Switzerland Season
